The first seconds after the blowout: stay calm
A sudden loss of pressure usually shows up as vibration in the steering wheel, the vehicle pulling to one side, or a noticeable driving noise. It’s important to hold the steering wheel steady and avoid braking abruptly. Reduce your speed in a controlled way and look early for a safe place to stop.
Stopping and securing the vehicle correctly
- Switch on the hazard lights immediately
- If possible, coast onto the hard shoulder or a parking area
- Put on your hi-vis vest before leaving the vehicle
- Place the warning triangle at a sufficient distance (on motorways, approx. 150–250 m)
- Get yourself and any passengers to safety behind the crash barrier
On heavily trafficked motorway sections, exiting the vehicle on the traffic side is especially risky. Whenever possible, always exit on the side facing away from traffic.
Why continuing to drive on a damaged tire is not an option
A damaged tire loses structural integrity quickly under load. Continuing to drive risks total tire failure, rim damage, and in the worst case, loss of control of the vehicle.
