A DAF carrying machinery parts toward Kassel picked up a deep sidewall cut on the B252 outside Korbach. The driver thought he had run over debris on a logging stretch, and he was probably right. These Hessen back roads between Frankenberg and Brilon are hard on tyres, with stone and timber waste on the verges. He felt the steer pulling and stopped in a forest lay-by before it let go completely. Sensible. A steer tyre that fails at speed is the one you really do not want to gamble on. We took the size over the phone and headed out from the Korbach side. The lay-by was tight and shaded, so the fitter set up extra lighting even though it was daytime, just to see the rim properly. The cut had not reached the cords but it was close enough that a repair was off the table. New tyre on, torqued, pressure matched to the other steer side so the truck tracked straight. We checked the cut tyre over with the driver so he understood why it had to go. The job ran a touch long because of the cramped lay-by, but he was back on the B252 inside the hour, heading for the A44 and Kassel. We see plenty of work along here toward Warstein, Meschede and Paderborn, so the right sizes are usually on the van.
