The A15 between Cottbus and the Polish border at Forst sees a constant stream of eastbound freight, and it was on this stretch that a MAN TGX 26.500 lost a rear outer drive tyre at 07:15 on a Thursday morning. The failure was sudden: the carcase split along the shoulder groove and the rubber disintegrated over roughly 80 metres of carriageway before the driver could get the truck onto the hard shoulder. Spremberg is about twelve kilometres west of Forst and the call reached us as the driver was setting his warning triangles. We came from the Cottbus direction, crossing the B97 junction and joining the A15 eastbound. On arrival the axle was sitting on the rim guard. The outer drive tyre was completely destroyed and there was scuffing on the inner tyre sidewall from contact during the few seconds it took to stop. We checked the inner tyre and found no structural damage, only surface abrasion. The outer was replaced with a 315/80 R22.5, torqued correctly and the inner tyre reinspected after reinflation. The MAN was mobile again by 09:05. The driver was carrying machine parts to Goerlitz and could still make his delivery window with a thirty-minute buffer. The A15 near Spremberg and Forst (Lausitz) carries a lot of cross-border traffic to Poland and the Czech corridor, and fast response on this stretch is one of our regular commitments.
